Resources for teachers, by teachers

During the month of September I had the absolute pleasure of providing each of my students with an Xperia Z tablet to use courtesty of Sony!  Anyone who knows me, realizes what an opportunity this was for me.  I try to be app savvy but it is frustrating when you have ideas for how tablets like the Sony Xperia Z can be used in the classroom when you only have one!  Here was my chance for all of my students to experience how the Xperia could enhance their learning within the Common Core State Standards.
So how did I do it? I first started with the my curriculum. I went through all the expectations for my students and learning goals, and then I thought of mini-projects they could complete so that they were still learning content, while learning how to use the apps on the tablet.  My main purpose was to use the tablet in authentic ways and not as the “cool toy we get to play with.”  High expectations were communicated to my students and they took their learning with the tablet seriously.
Here is a brief look at what is possible with your students when they have Xperia tablets available.

I plan on elaborating in future posts about the specific lessons that were featured in the above video.  I am calling the skills my students learned when using the tablets “Tower Skills” because they were like stone blocks that built upon each other to allow for sophisticated usage that required higher thinking skills.  To see some of the finished products you can go to our class blog and see our final map projects using a variety of apps, Math tutorials made with primarily the Lensoo app and blog entries of personal narrative writing pieces using the Blogger app.
