Resources for teachers, by teachers

By Jason Dewey

If your situation is similar to many I have encountered in multiple school districts around the country, BIP tracking looks different in each school you visit, heck sometimes in every classroom you visit.  There are charts, tally sheets, narratives, and every type of tracking mechanism under the sun, but if not every teacher is using the same method it is very hard to turn any of the data that may be collected into something useable and beneficial to eitehr the teacher or student.  What's more, there isn't a mechanism in place to assure compliance with daily tracking requirements.

This is a brick wall that I kept banging my head against while supervising a program that was heavily populated by students with behavior related disabilities.  I was trying to develop a method to accurately track all behavior compliance goals and ensure that agreed upon behavioral management strategies were being utilized with the proper students.  I needed numerous teachers to do this religiously over several subject areas/classrooms everyday, and I needed a way to easily track whether they were complying quickly and effortlessly.  In the midst of this conundrum, I discovered Wufoo and a solution that was effective and accessible from my Sony Xperia tablet or smartphone.

So What Is It?

Wufoo is a form creation website with an extremely intuitive and user friendly interface.  Anyone familiar with Survey Monkey will immediately recognize Wufoo's interface as very similar and equally user friendly.  It is a simple point/click and drag/drop experience that allows you to customize forms in serveral ways.

What Can I Do With It?

  1. You can simply create text fields to be populated by the end-user.
  2. You can provide the end-user with multiple choice selections of your own design.
  3. You can generate check box lists of options for the end-user to select.
  4. You can create drop down boxes with pre-made choices for the end-user to select

What Does It Look Like?

To kick the tires on this site simply head on over to http://www.wufoo.com, but here is a screen shot of the dashboard to give you an idea of the user interface.

While these are the most common options, there are some more advanced options as well, although I have rarely had occasion to utilize them for behavior tracking.  Here is a link to a sample behavior tracking form so you can get a feel for what the finished product is like (real names have been changed along with other identifying information for confidentiality purposes):  https://jasondewey.wufoo.com/forms/sample-student-behavior-tracking-form/  Also, here is a screen shot of the finished product.

So What Does It All Mean?

Now, to put it all together.  So you have created a tracking form, now what?  How do you make sure that all of the people who are supposed to be utilizing the form actually are?  If you are like me, you have 100 things to do every hour of the day and only enough time to commit to 10 of them.  This is the beauty of this solution.  You don't even have to be in the building to check up on compliance.  There is an option to have Wufoo email you every time a survey is completed.  This will allow you real time compliance tracking anywhere you can receive email.  Further, you can log-in and view all entries, assign authorized users to change and edit forms (you can assign all forms or specific forms depending on the teacher), and gernally manage the entire system.  No more waiting until the next time you have a chance to visit a teacher in their classroom or on their planning period in order to determine if they have been keeping up with a student's behavior tracking.

Show Me The Data!

What about the data you ask?  How do I use all of this to create something decipherable and beneficial.  Wufoo allows you to run reports inside of the program or export all of your data to a spreadsheet.  So instead of half a dozen tally sheets and anedecdotal notes, you can easily generate this!

Disclaimer: While Wufoo is a free site, in order to use it with mutliple forms and mutliple students Wufoo does charge a nomial fee.  Currently the most commonly used packages range between $15 and $30 per month.
